Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting a business, product, or page cited and recommended inside answers generated by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. Where traditional SEO competes for a position in a list of links, GEO competes to be one of the few sources an AI names when it answers a question directly. Last reviewed: 27 August 2026 ## Why the term exists For twenty-five years, being findable meant being ranked. A search engine returned ten links, you competed for one of them, and the click carried the visitor to your site, where you told your own story. Search engine optimisation is the whole industry built on that arrangement. Generated answers break the arrangement in two places. First, the assistant answers in place. It reads the sources, synthesises them, and gives the user a paragraph. Often no click happens at all. Second, the answer names a handful of businesses, not ten. There is no page two to be on. So a new name was needed for a different competition. You are no longer competing for a rank in a list. You are competing to be inside the sentence the assistant writes. That is what GEO means, and it is why the practice needed its own word. Related labels you will see include answer engine optimisation (AEO) and AI search optimisation. They describe roughly the same work. One caution about the acronym. In older marketing writing, GEO meant geographic targeting. If a vendor pitches you "GEO services", ask which one they mean. ## How do AI assistants build an answer? The mechanism matters, because everything you can actually change sits inside it. Assistants differ in the details and change their systems often, so treat the following as the general shape rather than a fixed spec. Four stages, in order. Retrieval. When a question needs current or specific information, the assistant does not answer from memory alone. It issues web searches behind the scenes. One user prompt typically becomes several queries, phrased differently from what the user typed. These are usually called fan-out queries. This is the single most important fact in GEO: you are not competing for the user's prompt, you are competing for the searches the machine runs behind it. Sources. The assistant fetches a set of pages from those results and reads them. What it can read is what it can use. A page that needs JavaScript to render its content, or that keeps its key facts inside an image or a PDF, is often functionally invisible at this stage even when it ranks well. Synthesis. The model writes an answer from the retrieved text plus what it already learned in training. Where sources agree, it states things confidently. Where they conflict, it hedges, picks the better-corroborated version, or omits the claim. Consistency across independent sources is therefore doing real work here. Citation. The answer carries links back to some of the sources used. Not every source is cited, and citation is not the same as influence. A page can shape the wording of an answer without appearing in the footnotes. Both matter, and the visible citation is the one you can measure most easily. We take this apart in detail on how ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity choose which businesses to recommend , including why an assistant will name your competitor and not you. What it looks like ## One prompt, several searches, one shortlist who does generative engine optimization in Dubai Behind that prompt, an assistant typically searches for things like "GEO agency Dubai", "generative engine optimization services UAE", and "AI search optimisation consultant Dubai 2026". It reads what comes back, notices which names appear across several independent pages, and writes a shortlist of three to five . The prompt was never the query. The fan-out was. One prompt · the assistant runs several searches before writing a word ## GEO vs SEO difference The short version: SEO is the substrate, GEO sits on top of it. A page an AI assistant cannot find, fetch or parse cannot be cited, so crawlability, speed, clean HTML and genuine topical authority all still matter. Anyone telling you the two are unrelated is selling something. What changes is the target and the unit of victory: You compete for a mention, not a rank. Position ten is worth something in search. It is worth nothing in an answer that names four businesses. Much of the surface is not yours. Reviews, directories, forum threads and "best of" roundups are read alongside your own site, and often trusted more, because they are independent. Format is leverage. Models lift short declarative sentences, tables and clear headings far more readily than they lift atmosphere. Copy written to persuade a human reader is frequently unusable as source text. Measurement is sampled, not ranked. Answers vary between runs, so you measure appearance rates over a fixed prompt set, not a single position. The full side-by-side, including what carries over unchanged, is on GEO vs SEO: what changes, what carries over . ## What actually influences whether you get cited Nobody outside the labs can rank these factors precisely, and any list that claims to is guessing. What follows is opinionated, based on what we see move answers, and ordered by how often it turns out to be the problem. Being described consistently everywhere. If your site calls you one thing, your Google profile another, and a directory a third, the model has no coherent picture of you and hedges. Freeze one sentence describing what you are and use it verbatim in every profile. Third-party corroboration. Independent pages that mention you carry more weight than your own claims about yourself. Reviews, listicles, local guides, forum threads, integration directories, press. This is the part most businesses have never worked on deliberately. Existing in the exact phrasing people ask. Conversational questions are longer and more specific than keywords. If nothing on the open web pairs your name with "quiet restaurant for a business lunch in Dubai Marina", you will not surface for it. Extractable answer-shaped content. Headings that are real questions, a direct answer in the first paragraph under each, short sentences, tables for comparisons, plain claims a model can lift without interpretation. Technical accessibility to AI crawlers. A separate question from Googlebot access. Check that GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and OAI-SearchBot are not blocked in robots.txt, and that your content exists in the served HTML rather than being assembled by JavaScript. Structured data and entity markup. Schema.org markup does not force a citation. It does make your facts unambiguous, which helps a model state them confidently rather than avoid them. Freshness and dates. Assistants often bake the current date into their searches. Visibly dated, genuinely maintained pages tend to be favoured for questions where recency matters. Notice what is not on this list: keyword density, word count targets, and anything resembling a trick. There is no known input that reliably forces a model to name you. There are many inputs that change what it reads. ## How do you measure generative engine optimization? Honestly, and with a stated margin. AI answers are probabilistic. Ask the same question twice and you can get two different shortlists. That is not a flaw in your measurement, it is the nature of the surface, and any tool that reports a single tidy "rank" is hiding it from you. The method that works: Freeze a prompt set. Thirty to fifty real questions your customers would ask, written the way a person actually asks. Freeze it, so month-on-month numbers are comparable. Run it repeatedly, across assistants. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews answer differently. Sample each more than once. Record appearance rate, not position. In what share of runs are you named at all? That is the headline number. Record share against a named competitor set. Who is absorbing your category's answers, and by how much. Record how you are described. Being named incorrectly is its own problem. Log every factual error about your prices, hours, locations or features. Record the cited sources. The list of pages driving the answer is the actual work list. It tells you which third-party properties to go and fix. Crawler hits are a leading indicator, not an outcome. Rising GPTBot and ClaudeBot traffic on a new page means it is being read. Presence in the answers is what counts. ## How to start today, for free You do not need an agency to begin, and we would rather you checked before you talked to anyone, including us. Half an hour, no budget: Write down the five questions a customer would ask an assistant to find a business like yours. Full sentences, with the constraints they would actually include. Ask each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Do not mention your own name. Screenshot every answer, with the date visible. Count. How many times are you named? How many times is each competitor? Ask a follow-up: "why those?" The sources it lists are the pages currently deciding your category. Ask an assistant directly what your business does, then check the answer for errors. That description is what your prospects are reading. Fix the cheapest thing first. Usually that is a wrong primary category on a Google Business Profile, a menu or price list trapped in an image, or a blocked AI crawler. If the result is uncomfortable, that is the normal outcome, and it is the reason this page exists. For the mechanism behind what you just saw, read how AI assistants choose businesses . Questions ## Questions people ask AI assistants about GEO What is generative engine optimization? Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting a business, product, or page cited and recommended inside answers generated by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. Where traditional SEO competes for a position in a list of links, GEO competes to be one of the few sources an AI names when it answers a question directly. In practice it means changing what the models read about you: your site, your listings, your reviews, and the third-party pages that mention you. What does GEO mean in marketing? In marketing, GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It is the discipline of earning a mention inside a generated answer rather than a ranking in a list of links. The older sense of GEO, meaning geographic or local targeting, is a different thing entirely, so check which one a vendor means before you buy anything. What is AI search optimization? AI search optimization is a looser umbrella term for the same work: making a website legible, retrievable and quotable for AI assistants and AI-generated search results. Some people use it to mean only Google AI Overviews. We use generative engine optimization because it covers every assistant, not just Google's. What is answer engine optimization (AEO)? Answer engine optimization (AEO) is a near-synonym for GEO. It came out of the older work on featured snippets and voice answers, where the goal was to be the single extracted answer on a results page. GEO is the broader term because generated answers cite several sources and synthesise them, rather than lifting one. Treat the two as the same practice under different labels. Is GEO worth it for a small business? Usually yes, and often more than for a large one. The competitive set for 'best X in a specific neighbourhood' is small, and almost nobody in it is optimising for AI answers on purpose. A corrected Google Business Profile, a page that answers the actual question in plain text, and a handful of consistent third-party mentions can move a local answer. That is not true in a saturated national category. ## Want us to run this for your business? Search engine optimisation (SEO) competes for a position in a list of links. They share their technical foundations, so good SEO is the substrate for GEO. What differs is the target, the sources that decide it, and how you measure success. Last reviewed: 27 August 2026 Side by side ## GEO vs SEO, dimension by dimension Generative engine optimization compared with search engine optimisation, August 2026 Dimension SEO GEO What you compete for A position in a ranked list of ten links. A mention inside a generated answer that names three to five businesses. Unit of victory Rank, then click-through rate, then session. Being named at all, then how you are described, then the citation link. Who controls the surface Mostly you. Your pages, your titles, your site structure. Mostly other people. Reviews, directories, roundups and forums are read alongside your site, and often trusted more. Key inputs Crawlability, on-page relevance, internal links, backlinks, page speed, intent match. All of the above, plus consistent description across sources, third-party corroboration, extractable answer-shaped content, entity markup, AI crawler access. Measurement Rank tracking and impressions. A stable position for a fixed keyword. Sampled appearance rate across a frozen prompt set, per assistant, plus share against a named competitor set. Answers vary between runs, so you report rates and trends. Cadence Positions move over weeks and months. Reporting is monthly. Answers can shift week to week as sources change and models update. Monitoring is continuous. ## What carries over from SEO Almost all of the foundations. This is the part vendors selling "the death of SEO" leave out. An assistant does not have a private index of the web sitting beside the one search engines use. When it needs current information it runs web searches, reads what comes back, and writes from that. Everything that determines whether your page comes back in those searches is classic SEO. Specifically, these still decide whether you are even in the running: Crawlability and indexing. If a crawler cannot fetch it, no model can cite it. Server-rendered content. Content assembled by JavaScript in the browser is frequently not seen at all. This is a harder constraint for AI retrieval than it is for Googlebot. Topical relevance and depth. Pages that genuinely answer a question rank, get retrieved, and get quoted. The same asset serves both jobs. Links and authority. Retrieval leans on the same ranking signals, so the pages that rank are the pages that get read. Speed and clean HTML. Fetching has timeouts. Slow pages get dropped quietly. Local fundamentals. An accurate Google Business Profile and consistent name, address and phone details feed both the map pack and the assistant. So the honest framing is: GEO is not an alternative to SEO. It is a second layer of work that only pays once the first layer exists. If your site is technically broken, fix that before anyone sells you an AI strategy. ## What is genuinely new Four things, and they are the reason a separate discipline exists rather than a new checklist item. ## You are optimising for searches you never see A user prompt does not become one query. Assistants typically expand it into several differently phrased searches, often with the current date attached, and retrieve from those. You are not competing for the sentence the user typed. You are competing for the machine's reformulations of it. That changes which phrasings you need to exist in, and it is why keyword lists translate badly. ## Most of the deciding surface is not your website When an assistant assembles a picture of your business, your own site is one source among many, and it is the least independent one. Review platforms, directories, local guides, "best of" listicles, Reddit threads and trade press are all read too. In practice, a substantial share of GEO work is not on your website at all. It is making the rest of the web describe you accurately and consistently. ## Format is a ranking factor in a way it never quite was Models lift text. Short declarative sentences, a direct answer under a question-shaped heading, tables with one row per dimension, plain facts with dates. Persuasive brochure prose is nearly unusable as source material, because there is nothing in it a model can safely state as fact. ## Results are probabilistic, so measurement changes shape The same question asked twice can produce two different shortlists. There is no rank to track. You freeze a prompt set, sample it repeatedly across assistants, and report appearance rates and trends. Anyone showing you a single clean "ChatGPT ranking" number is hiding the variance. There is more on this in what generative engine optimization is . ## Is GEO replacing SEO? No. It sits on top. The clearest way to see it: an assistant cannot cite a page it cannot retrieve, and retrieval runs through search infrastructure. So SEO remains the entry ticket. What is genuinely shifting is where the value lands after the ticket is punched. Informational queries that used to send traffic increasingly get answered in place. If your content strategy was built on winning those clicks, that model is under pressure, and pretending otherwise does not help. Meanwhile the value of being the named recommendation goes up, because an answer that names four businesses concentrates demand far more sharply than a page of ten links. The practical conclusion is unglamorous. Keep doing SEO. Stop measuring it only by traffic from informational queries. Add measurement of whether you are named in the answers, and add the work that is not on your own site. ## GEO agency vs SEO agency: which do I need? Diagnose before you buy. Three cases cover most businesses. You are invisible in ordinary search too. Hire SEO first. GEO has nothing to stand on, and a GEO engagement would spend its first three months doing SEO anyway. You rank well but assistants never name you. This is the GEO case. Your site is fine and the problem is elsewhere: how you are described across the web, whether third parties corroborate you, whether your content is extractable, whether AI crawlers are allowed in. You already have an SEO agency you like. Keep them. Add GEO as direction rather than duplication, and make the split explicit so nobody bills twice for the same fix. Plenty of our engagements are advisory for this reason. Two things to ask any agency pitching AI visibility. First, what exactly do you measure, and does your reporting acknowledge that answers vary between runs? Second, what proportion of the work is off our own website? If the answer to the second is "none", they are selling you SEO with a new label. If you want to see where you actually stand before deciding, the DIY method is written out in full on the GEO explainer , the mechanism is on how AI assistants choose businesses , and the rest of the common objections are on the FAQ . Questions ## Questions people ask about GEO and SEO What is the difference between GEO and SEO? SEO earns you a position in a list of links, so the user still clicks through to your site. GEO earns you a mention inside an answer the assistant writes for the user, often with no click at all. The practical difference is that GEO depends heavily on sources you do not own: reviews, directories, forums and third-party roundups. They overlap in the technical foundations, and good SEO is table stakes for GEO. Is GEO replacing SEO? No. GEO sits on top of SEO rather than replacing it. An AI assistant finds candidate pages through search infrastructure, so a page that is uncrawlable, slow or thin is not retrievable and cannot be cited. What is changing is where the value lands: less traffic from informational queries, more value in being named inside the answer. Keep the SEO, add the GEO. GEO agency vs SEO agency: which do I need? If your site is technically broken, thin, or invisible in ordinary search, hire an SEO agency first, because GEO has nothing to stand on. If your search rankings are fine but AI assistants do not name you, that is a GEO problem and an SEO agency will not usually be looking at it. Most businesses need both, and often the honest answer is a good SEO agency doing the substrate plus GEO direction on top. Check what your current agency already does before adding anyone. ## Not sure which you need? Send us your site and the questions your customers ask. It issues several differently phrased queries, retrieves pages, weighs how consistently a business is described across independent sources, and then synthesises a shortlist. That shortlist is almost always three to five names. Last reviewed: 27 August 2026 Worked example ## What happens between the prompt and the answer best steakhouse in Dubai Marina for an anniversary, not too loud The assistant does not search for that sentence. It typically runs something closer to "best steakhouse Dubai Marina", "romantic restaurants Dubai Marina 2026" and "quiet fine dining Dubai Marina reviews". It reads the Google profiles, the review pages, two or three "best of" guides and whichever restaurant sites are readable. Then it looks for agreement. The names that appear across several independent sources, described in words that match the constraints, become the answer. Everyone else is not rejected. They are never retrieved. One prompt · several hidden searches · four names in the answer ## How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to recommend? Systems differ between assistants and change frequently, so what follows is the general shape rather than a specification. Nobody outside the labs knows the weights. The shape, though, is consistent enough to work from, and it has four stages. ## 1. Fan-out: your prompt becomes several searches A recommendation question needs current, local, specific information, so the assistant grounds its answer in search rather than recalling it. It rewrites your prompt into a small set of queries, commonly two to six, phrased the way a search engine expects rather than the way you spoke. Assistants often attach the current year or month, because recency matters for this kind of question. This is the fact that reorganises everything else. You are not competing for the sentence the customer typed. You are competing for the machine's reformulations of it, and you never see them directly. Measuring them means reconstructing them, which is what a monitoring loop does. ## 2. Retrieval: a handful of pages get read The assistant takes results from those searches and fetches some of them. Two filters apply, and both are unforgiving. The page has to appear in the results at all, which is ordinary search ranking. Then it has to be readable once fetched. Content that only exists after JavaScript runs, prices locked inside an image, a menu published as a PDF scan: all of these can be fetched and still yield nothing usable. ## 3. Weighing: consistency across independent sources This is the stage business owners most often miss, and the most important one commercially. The model is not reading your website and deciding whether to believe your marketing. It is reading your site alongside your Google profile, your reviews, two directories, a local guide and a forum thread, and noticing whether they agree. Agreement across independent sources tends to produce a confident claim. Disagreement tends to produce a hedge, or an omission. Consider what that means in practice: A business described the same way in six places is easy to recommend. A business described three different ways is hard to characterise, so it often gets left out rather than described wrongly. A business mentioned only on its own website has one self-interested source. That is weak evidence and models treat it as such. ## 4. Synthesis: three to five names Finally the model writes an answer. It is writing prose for a person, not producing a ranking, so it names as many businesses as fit a readable paragraph or a short list. In practice that is three to five, with a line of justification each. This is the whole commercial argument for GEO, and it is worth stating plainly. A page of search results has ten organic listings plus a map pack plus ads. An AI answer has four slots. The distribution is not "a bit less traffic for everyone". It is concentration. In this channel, being sixth-best and being invisible are the same outcome. ## How do AI assistants pick sources to cite? Retrieval and citation are related but not identical, and conflating them causes bad decisions. A page can influence the wording of an answer without appearing in the footnotes, and a cited page is not necessarily the one that shaped the recommendation. What the citable sources tend to have in common: They rank. Retrieval runs through search, so ordinary ranking decides the candidate pool. They answer the query directly. A page with a question-shaped heading and the answer in the first sentence beneath it is far easier to quote than one that circles the topic. They are legible. Plain HTML, real text, clear structure. Tables and lists get lifted almost verbatim. They look independent. Third-party corroboration beats self-description, because it is evidence rather than a claim. They are current and visibly dated. For anything time-sensitive, a visible date helps the model decide it is safe to use. Perplexity and Google AI Overviews cite explicitly and prominently, which makes them the easiest surfaces to audit. ChatGPT and Claude cite when they have searched, and the citation set is usually narrower than the set they read. Start your auditing where citations are visible, because that is where the evidence is cheapest to collect. ## Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business? In our experience the cause is almost always one of four, and they are listed here roughly in order of how often we find them. None of them is that the model dislikes you. You do not exist in that phrasing. The question was "family-friendly dentist in JLT with weekend hours". Nothing on the open web connects your name to those words. You may be an excellent dentist and still be unfindable for that specific question. You are described inconsistently. Your homepage says one thing, your Google profile has an old category, a directory lists a previous address. The model cannot form a confident picture, so it reaches for a competitor it can describe cleanly. Nobody else vouches for you. No reviews with substance, no listicle appearances, no forum mentions, no local guide. The only source claiming you are good is you. Your site is technically unreadable. AI crawlers blocked in robots.txt, content assembled by JavaScript, a menu or price list published as an image. Ranking fine in Google and being invisible to an assistant is an entirely normal combination. There is a fifth possibility worth naming honestly: the answer is genuinely variable. Ask the same question twice and the shortlist can change. Before concluding anything, sample the question several times over several days. That is why measurement uses appearance rates rather than a single check, as described in what generative engine optimization is . ## How to get my business recommended by ChatGPT Here is the method, in the order we would run it ourselves. You can do all six steps without hiring anyone, and most businesses see the biggest movement from steps one and two, which are free. Establish your baseline, honestly. Write the ten questions a customer would really ask an assistant to find a business like yours. Full sentences with real constraints, not keywords. Ask each in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, twice, on different days. Never mention your own name. Record who gets named and how often. This is now your scoreboard, and you should freeze the question list so future runs are comparable. Clear the technical blocks. Open your robots.txt and check that GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot are not disallowed. Turn JavaScript off in your browser and reload your key pages: whatever disappears is invisible to retrieval. Move menus, prices, service lists and opening hours out of images and PDFs into real text. This step alone fixes a surprising number of cases. Freeze one description and impose it everywhere. Write one sentence that says exactly what you are, who you serve and where. Then put that exact sentence, unchanged, on your homepage, your Google Business Profile, your social profiles and every directory listing you can edit. Fix the primary category on your Google profile while you are there, since a wrong category is one of the most common single causes of absence in local answers. Publish pages that answer the real questions. Take the questions from step one and give each a page or a section. Use the question, verbatim, as the heading. Answer it in the first two sentences beneath. Keep sentences short and claims plain. Use a table when you are comparing things. You are writing source material for a machine that lifts text, so bury nothing. Earn independent corroboration. This is the slow part and the part that matters most. Ask real customers for reviews that describe specifics rather than saying "great service". Get listed in the directories and local guides your category actually uses. Find the "best of" roundups that already rank for your questions and make a genuine case to be included. Answer questions in the forums where your customers talk. Every independent page describing you correctly makes the model more confident about you. Re-run the scoreboard, monthly, forever. Same frozen questions, same assistants, same method. Track your appearance rate and your competitors'. Log every factual error an assistant states about you, because a confident wrong answer is worse than absence. Expect months, not days, on anything that depends on third-party sources, and expect technical fixes to show up faster. One thing this method will not do: guarantee an outcome. Nobody controls what a model says, and anyone promising to is lying to you. What you control is everything the model reads. Change that, measure the answers, repeat. If you want the wider context, read GEO vs SEO for how this fits with search work you may already be paying for, and the FAQ for the rest of the common questions. Questions ## Questions people ask about AI recommendations How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to recommend? For a recommendation question, ChatGPT typically searches the web rather than answering from memory. It expands your prompt into several differently phrased searches, retrieves a set of pages, and reads them. Businesses that appear consistently across independent sources, described in terms that match the question, are the ones that make the shortlist. The shortlist is usually three to five names, because that is what fits a readable answer. Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business? Usually one of four reasons. Nothing on the open web pairs your name with the phrasing the question uses. Your business is described inconsistently across sources, so the model has no confident picture of you. Independent corroboration is thin, meaning the only page claiming you are good is your own. Or your site is technically unreadable to AI crawlers, through blocked bots, JavaScript-rendered content, or key facts trapped in images and PDFs. How do AI assistants pick sources to cite? Assistants retrieve candidate pages through web search, so ordinary ranking signals decide which pages are seen at all. From there they favour pages that directly answer the query in readable text, that agree with other retrieved sources, and that look independent and current. Citation is not the same as influence: a page can shape the wording of an answer without appearing in the footnotes. How to get my business recommended by ChatGPT Make yourself retrievable, consistent and corroborated. Confirm AI crawlers are not blocked and that your key facts sit in plain server-rendered text. Freeze one description of what you are and use it verbatim everywhere, including your Google Business Profile. Publish pages that answer, in the customer's own phrasing, the questions they would ask an assistant. Then earn independent mentions in reviews, directories and roundups, and measure whether the answers move. Nobody can force a model to name you. ## Rather see your own numbers first? The process ## Three steps, in order. ## 1 · We talk You tell us about your business: what you sell, who buys it, how they'd ask for it, who your real competitors are. This conversation is the product. Everything else is built on it. ## 2 · We look Around that first conversation we take a look ourselves: we run the real questions your customers ask across the major assistants and read what AI currently says about you and your competitors. You see real screenshots, not a deck. ## 3 · We optimise You get a plan specific to your business: what to change on your site, your listings, and the third-party sources AI reads. If you're not sure GEO is worth it for your business yet, read what generative engine optimisation is first, or just ask us. We'll tell you honestly. Questions ## Asked and answered What does a GEO engagement actually include? Whatever your situation calls for. Typical work: restructuring site content so AI systems can read and cite it, entity and schema markup, fixing listings and the third-party sources AI reads, content built to answer the questions your customers actually ask, and the classic SEO substrate underneath. The mix is decided after we understand your business, not before. How much does GEO cost? It depends on your category, your competitor set, and how much of the work your team does in-house. We scope every engagement individually after the first conversation, and you'll get a number within a day of it. We don't publish prices because we don't sell packages. I already have an SEO agency. Do I have to replace them? No. Plenty of engagements are advisory: we direct, your team or agency executes. If your agency is already doing GEO well, we'll tell you and save you the money. Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business? No, and nobody honestly can. What we can do is change everything the models read about you, measure whether the answers move, and tell you plainly what is and isn't working. ## Tell us about your business. One conversation. We'll run the real questions your customers ask before we reply, so the first thing you see is where you actually stand. Start the conversation Boost Search Ask ChatGPT for the best in your category. It didn't say your name. Boost Search is a generative engine optimization consultancy in Dubai. Restaurants, clinics, brokers, gyms, salons. The recommendation is made before anyone opens a map. See what AI says about your business If you run a restaurant Run it yourself ## Open ChatGPT. Ask it what a visitor would ask. where should we eat tonight in Dubai Marina, somewhere quiet, good for an anniversary The assistant returns three to five venues, each with a one-line reason: the terrace, the noise level, the tasting menu, the view. It cites a couple of Dubai guide pages and a review site. Every name in that list gets considered. Nothing else does. Illustrative example of the answer shape, not a real transcript I just moved to Dubai, which dentist near JLT should I register with A new resident with no local knowledge asks once and books once. The assistant assembles the shortlist from profiles, directories and reviews. Nobody in the answer paid for the slot. Somebody earned it. Illustrative example of the answer shape, not a real transcript You know your Google ranking. Do you know your ChatGPT ranking? Most owners have never checked. That check is where we start, and the first one is free: five real customer questions, run across the major assistants, returned as screenshots. Why here ## Why this matters more in Dubai than almost anywhere Dubai runs on people who have not been here long. Tourists on a four-day trip. New residents in their first month. Business travellers with one free evening. Families relocating and rebuilding every routine at once. These are customers with no local knowledge and no habits, which means they have no default answer in their head. So they ask for one. In a city with a settled population, most first-time customers arrive through a friend, a neighbour, or years of driving past your sign. Here, a disproportionate share of first-time customers arrive through whatever answered the question on their phone. That is a channel, and almost nobody in your category is competing for it on purpose yet. Language compounds it. Someone asks in Russian, Hindi, Tagalog or Arabic, and the assistant still assembles the answer largely from English-language sources: English review text, English guide pages, an English Google Business Profile. The question was not in English. The recommendation was decided in English anyway. If your English-language surface is thin, you are invisible to askers in every language. The work ## What we actually change We don't just edit your website. Most of what AI says about you comes from other people's pages. ## Your website's content and structure The things a model can actually lift: plain text instead of images and PDFs, headings that match how people ask, direct answers near the top of the page, and structured data that names what you are. ## Your Google Business Profile Primary category accuracy first, because a wrong category quietly removes you from a whole class of answers. Then attributes, hours, service list, photos and the questions in the Q&A section. ## The directories and guides models read The Dubai listicles, city guides and category directories that assistants cite when they answer local questions. Being absent from those pages is the single most common reason a business is absent from the answer. ## Your review surface Not just the star count. The recency, the language, and whether the review text contains the words people use when they ask: quiet, outdoor, family, late, walk-in, parking. ## The third-party pages that mention you Roundups, blog posts, community threads, press. These are the sources a model corroborates against, and they are written by people who are not you. Getting them accurate is most of the job. ## What is technically readable Whether AI crawlers can reach your content at all is a different question from whether Googlebot can. Heavy client-side rendering, blocked agents and text locked in images all fail here. Pick your industry ## What this looks like in your category ## Restaurants and cafes Menus as text, occasion vocabulary, review recency, and the listicles assistants lean on when someone asks where to eat tonight. Read the restaurant page → ## Clinics and aesthetics Treatment-level content, practitioner credentials as machine-readable entities, and condition-based phrasing, within UAE advertising rules. Talk to us about it → ## Real estate Community and building-level pages, off-plan and secondary vocabulary, the agent as an entity, portal listings and RERA credentials. Talk to us about it → ## Fitness and studios Class types, coach bios, trial-offer language, and neighbourhood proximity phrased the way people actually ask for it. Talk to us about it → ## Salons and spas Service menus as readable text, the brands and products you carry, and galleries with alt text that describes the actual work. Talk to us about it → ## Something else The method does not care what you sell. Tell us your category and the question a customer would ask, and we will run it. Talk to us about it → Only the restaurant page is published so far. The rest are written as we publish them, one per week. Until then the fastest route is to ask us directly. How we start ## We talk first, then we look It starts with a call. We want to understand what you sell, who walks in, and what you are actually trying to fix. There is no package to pick from and nothing to buy at that stage. Around that conversation we take a look ourselves. We ask the real questions a customer in your category would ask, in the phrasing they would use, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews. We keep the screenshots and we talk you through them: who gets recommended, whether you appear, how you are described when you do, and any factual errors about you. That costs nothing and carries no obligation. We are in Dubai, so we would rather do it in person. We will come to you and run the questions on your own phone, so you see the answers appear yourself rather than taking our word for it. Then we propose a plan specific to your business: what to change, in what order, and what we would do versus what your own team can handle. Some of it you can do yourself, and we will say so when that is true. How we work · GEO for Dubai restaurants · If you sell online rather than locally Questions ## What Dubai business owners ask us GEO agency Dubai: what does one actually do? Generative engine optimization is the practice of getting a business named and cited inside AI-generated answers. In practice we run the real questions your customers ask across every major assistant, show you the answers, then change what those assistants read: your site's content and structure, your Google Business Profile, your review surface, your listings, and the third-party pages that mention you. Then we measure whether the answers move. Is this an AI SEO agency UAE businesses can use alongside their current agency? Yes. We work alongside an existing marketing or SEO team and hand over specific, implementable direction. Plenty of our engagements are advisory for exactly that reason. If your current agency is already doing this work well, we will tell you and save you the money. SEO consultant Dubai: is that the same thing? GEO earns you a mention inside a generated answer, which depends heavily on sources you do not own: reviews, directories, forums and third-party roundups. Good SEO is table stakes here, not the product. Dubai business AI search optimisation cost: what determines it? Nothing about the method requires us to be in the same room, though for local businesses the first meeting usually helps. ## See what AI says about your business Send us your business name and the question a customer would ask. Are you on it? Generative engine optimization is the practice of getting a product cited and recommended inside AI-generated answers. When a buyer asks an assistant for the best tool, vendor or brand in your category, it names a handful and explains why. We work on the sources behind that answer so your product is one of the names, and so the description attached to it is accurate. Tell us about your business If you sell software Run it yourself ## Ask an assistant to name the best tools in your category. best project management tools for a 30-person marketing agency Five products, each with a sentence of positioning, a note on pricing posture, and a line about who it suits. Sources underneath: a review platform, a roundup article, a forum thread. The comparison was written by third parties and the buyer treats it as neutral. Illustrative example of the answer shape, not a real transcript what are the main alternatives to the tool we currently use, and why would we switch A switching narrative assembled from competitor comparison pages, migration guides and complaint threads. Whoever wrote the comparison content owns the framing, and it is usually not the incumbent. Illustrative example of the answer shape, not a real transcript Then ask the follow-up: why those? The answer is a list of the sources that currently define your category. That list is the work. What changed ## The new funnel The old sequence was: the buyer has a problem, searches, lands on several vendor sites, reads your positioning in your words, and forms a view. Your homepage was the first argument you got to make. That sequence has an extra step in front of it now, and the extra step removes the rest. The buyer asks an assistant, gets a synthesised comparison built from review platforms, forum threads, roundup articles, documentation and competitor comparison pages, and arrives at your site, if at all, already decided. They are not there to learn what you do. They are there to confirm what they were told. The practical consequence is uncomfortable and worth stating plainly: your positioning is currently being written by third parties. Someone else's comparison page decides which category you are in. Someone else's roundup decides who you are an alternative to. A two-year-old forum thread decides what your weakness is. None of those authors work for you, and all of them are more readable to a model than your homepage. Mechanism ## What actually drives citation ## Being described consistently A model builds a picture of you from many sources at once. If your site calls you a workflow platform, your G2 profile says project management, and your press says productivity suite, the picture is incoherent and the model hedges by leaving you out. One category sentence, used everywhere, character for character, is worth more than most content programmes. ## Existing in comparison and alternatives content Assistants look where comparisons already live: versus pages, alternatives pages, migration guides, category roundups. If you have never published your own honest comparison content, you are absent from the exact document class that answers the exact question your buyer asks. ## Third-party corroboration Reviews, forum threads, roundups, integration directories, partner pages. Models weight claims that appear independently in multiple places over claims that appear only on the seller's own site. One well-argued third-party page often outperforms ten of your own. ## Content in extractable form Clear question-shaped headings, the answer stated in the first sentence, plain claims, real numbers with dates, and tables. A model lifts a paragraph, not a page. Write paragraphs that survive being lifted alone. ## Technical accessibility to AI crawlers This is a genuinely different question from Googlebot access, and it is where we find surprises in otherwise well-run sites. Client-side rendered docs, gated pricing, blocked user agents, key content in images. If a retrieval pipeline cannot fetch and parse it, it does not exist. ## Being the source, not just the subject The strongest position is publishing the reference material your category cites: the definition, the benchmark, the checklist, the dated dataset. That is the only durable version of this work, and it is what we do on our own properties first. Measurement ## What we look at when we work together What we look at in GEO work Metric What it tells you Prompt-set citation share How often you appear across a set of real buyer questions we agree with you, expressed as a rate rather than a position. Share of voice Your appearance rate against the competitors you name, so the number means something relative rather than in isolation. Sentiment and accuracy How you are described when you do appear, including every factual error, stale price and wrong feature claim. Model-by-model breakdown ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews behave differently. Winning one is not winning all. Change over time Movement against the same prompt set, alongside a record of what we altered and when, so cause and effect stay legible. Say this part out loud, because the alternative is a number you cannot trust: this is sampled and probabilistic, not a rank tracker. The same question asked twice can return different answers. We run each prompt repeatedly, report appearance rates and trends, and tell you the sample size. Anyone selling you a single stable AI ranking position is either misunderstanding the mechanism or hoping you do. Pick your model ## How this differs by business model ## SaaS Review platforms, forum threads, roundups and competitor comparison pages decide your category placement before a buyer reaches your pricing page. Read the SaaS page → ## E-commerce Product-level questions, comparison and 'best for' phrasing, retailer listings, and the review corpus a model reads instead of your product page. Talk to us about it → ## B2B services Category definition, credential and case evidence, directory presence, and the roundups that decide which firms get named at shortlist stage. Talk to us about it → Only the SaaS page is published so far. The e-commerce and B2B services pages are being written. Until they are live, ask us directly and we will run your category. How we engage ## It starts with a conversation We get on a call and talk about your business: who buys from you, what they are trying to solve, and which competitors keep turning up next to you. No fixed script, because every category behaves differently. Around that conversation we take a look ourselves. We put your buyers' real questions to the assistants, and we talk you through what comes back: who gets named, how you are described, and which pages the answers are built from. Real screenshots, free, no obligation. Then we tell you what we would do about it. Sometimes that is a plan your own team executes with our direction, which is the right call for plenty of companies. Sometimes we do the work with you. We scope it after the conversation, because until we have read the answers neither of us knows what the work is. How we work · GEO for SaaS companies · If you run a business in Dubai · What this looks like for a local business Questions ## What marketing leads ask us Isn't this just SEO with a new name? No, but they overlap and we do both. Classic SEO earns you a position in a list of links. GEO earns you a mention inside a generated answer, which depends heavily on sources you do not own: reviews, directories, forums and third-party roundups. Where the honest answer is "nobody can promise that", we say so. If you want the longer version, start with what generative engine optimization is , GEO vs SEO , or how AI assistants choose businesses . Last reviewed: 27 August 2026 What is Generative Engine Optimization? Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting a business, product, or page cited and recommended inside answers generated by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. Where traditional SEO competes for a position in a list of links, GEO competes to be one of the few sources an AI names when it answers a question directly. In short: it is how you get named in the answer, not just ranked in a list of links. Isn't this just SEO with a new name? No, but they overlap heavily and we do both. Classic SEO earns you a position in a list of links. GEO earns you a mention inside a generated answer, and that depends heavily on sources you do not own: reviews, directories, forums and third-party roundups. Good SEO is table stakes, because a page an assistant cannot retrieve cannot be cited. Anyone claiming the two are unrelated is selling you something. Can you actually control what ChatGPT says about my business? No, and we will be blunt: nobody can, and anyone who promises to is lying. What you can do is change everything the model reads. Your site, your listings, your reviews, and the third-party pages that mention you. Then you measure whether the answers move. That is the job, and it is the only honest version of it. How do you measure results? What do I actually get reported? We build a fixed set of the real questions your customers ask and run it across every major assistant on a schedule. You get how often you appear, how you compare against a named competitor set, how you are described including any factual errors, and how all of that changes month to month. AI answers vary between runs, so we sample repeatedly and report rates and trends rather than a single ranking number. Any tool that gives you one tidy rank is hiding the variance from you. How long before I see anything? Some fixes move answers within weeks: a wrong primary category on a Google profile, a menu published as an image instead of text, a blocked AI crawler. Others depend on third-party sources and content maturing, and those take months. We will give you an honest range once we have seen your situation, and we will not promise you a date. Anyone who does is guessing. My customers don't use ChatGPT. Isn't this early? Two answers. Even if your buyers never open an assistant, Google's AI Overviews now sit on top of ordinary search results, so they are already reading AI answers whether they chose to or not. And early is the argument for doing it, not against. Almost nobody in your category is competing for these slots on purpose, which makes it far cheaper to win now than it will be in a year. Do I need to rebuild my website? Almost never. Most of the work is content, structure, listings and third-party sources rather than a new site. If your site is technically inaccessible to AI crawlers, through heavy JavaScript rendering, blocked bots, or key content locked in images and PDFs, we will tell you exactly which parts need fixing and why. That is usually targeted work, not a rebuild. I already have an SEO agency. Do I have to replace them? No. We work alongside them and hand over specific, implementable direction. Plenty of our engagements are advisory for exactly this reason, with your existing team doing the execution. If your agency is already doing GEO well, we will tell you and save you the money. There is more on how the two disciplines divide up on our GEO vs SEO page. What does it cost? It depends on your category, your competitor set, and how much of the work your team does in-house. We do not sell packages, so every engagement is scoped individually after the first conversation, once we understand what actually needs doing. Tell us about your business and you will get a number within a working day. Does this work for a small local business, or only big brands? It works particularly well for local businesses. The competitive set for 'best X in a specific neighbourhood' is small and almost nobody in it is optimising for AI answers. A single well-structured page and a corrected Google Business Profile can move a local answer in a way that is simply impossible in a national category. Big brands have more sources to fix and more competitors defending the same slots. How do you find the questions my customers ask an AI? From your existing search data, your sales and enquiry patterns, the language in your reviews, your competitors' positioning, and how people actually phrase requests conversationally, which is longer and more specific than keywords. We build the prompt set with you, because you know your customers better than we do. Then we freeze it, so results are comparable month to month. Why should I trust a small consultancy with this? Because you can check us in thirty seconds. We build software: Dubai Foundry ships real products, and we optimise our own products in AI answers before we sell the method to anyone. Everything claimed on this site can be verified by asking an AI yourself. And the first conversation costs nothing: we will look at what AI says about you and tell you honestly whether we can help. Do you work outside Dubai? Yes. Locally in person, globally remote. Half our work is with digital businesses that have no physical location at all. What is generative engine optimization (GEO)? Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a business easy for AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Overviews to find, understand and recommend, rather than optimizing purely for traditional search rankings. Boost Search is a GEO consultancy based in Dubai, built by Dubai Foundry, that works with businesses on this directly. Who does generative engine optimisation in Dubai? Boost Search is a generative engine optimization consultancy based in Dubai, built by Dubai Foundry. It works with clients in Dubai in person and with remote clients worldwide. How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT? Getting recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants depends on how clearly and consistently your business is described across the web, not just traditional SEO signals. Boost Search advises on this through direct, conversation-first consulting scoped to each client rather than a fixed package. GEO vs SEO, which should I invest in? GEO and SEO are complementary, not competing: SEO targets ranking in search engines, GEO targets being cited and recommended by AI assistants and answer engines. Boost Search discusses the right mix for a given business in a direct conversation rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all split. How do AI assistants decide which businesses to recommend? AI assistants tend to favor businesses with clear, consistent, well-structured information about what they do that is available across the web and easy for an AI to verify and cite. This is the core of what generative engine optimization addresses. Is there a GEO agency in Dubai? Yes, Boost Search is a GEO consultancy based in Dubai, built by Dubai Foundry. It works with Dubai businesses in person and remote clients worldwide. Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business? AI assistants can only recommend what they can find and verify about a business online, so gaps or inconsistencies in that information are usually the reason a business goes unmentioned. Boost Search helps diagnose and address this through direct consulting. Does Boost Search offer GEO packages or fixed pricing? No. Boost Search does not sell productised packages, audits, retainers or monitoring subscriptions with published prices. Engagements are conversation-first and scoped individually per client; contact joe@dubaifoundry.ai to discuss. ## Still have a question? Ask it directly. If you hire us, this is the person you email and the person who does the job. There is nobody to hand you over to. The reason for the focus on GEO is not a market forecast. It came from watching our own products get recommended, or not recommended, by assistants, and finding that the levers were real, specific and mostly ignored. That is a better reason to start a practice than a trend report. joe@dubaifoundry.ai A direct email address, not a form. Replies within one working day. The studio ## Dubai Foundry Dubai Foundry is a working app studio. It ships products, and one of them is wipeboard.net , a live tracker used by players looking for a server to join. Those products are where the method came from: the same daily measurement loop we sell runs on them, and on this website. We're not marketers who read about AI. We build with these models, and we optimise our own products against them first. The practical consequence is that everything on this site is checkable. Ask an assistant who does generative engine optimization in Dubai. Ask it about a Rust server wipe schedule. If we could not win our own categories' answers, we would have no business selling the service. How we work ## Small on purpose You work with the person doing the work. The person who reads your answers is the person who writes your fix list and the person who joins your call. We take a limited number of clients. Not as a sales tactic. A prompt set run properly across five assistants, repeatedly, is hours of attention per client per month, and there are only so many hours. We say what we do not know. Nobody controls what ChatGPT says about your business, and anyone who promises to is lying. When an answer moves and we cannot explain why, that goes in the report in those words. We will tell you when you do not need us. If your existing agency is already doing this well, or your category's answers already name you, that is the reply you will get.
